FP Hines in 1875
Large two storey house with main floor above a sunken basement floor, with broad polygonal bay and adjcent conservatory. A broad entry at street level bridges the gap and steps up to the front door on the uppper level. There are three flamboyant sets of coupled chimney pots. The cast iron of the verandah and the front fence are c1998.
1874 Vardy plan shows a vacant triple block, the owner or occupier being Mrs Klemm
1875 a house was probably built for F P Hines, who advertised the sale of his furniture from Asgard in 1878. (Argus, 1 June 1878, p 2)
1896 MMBW plan shows the house built to a new northern boundary, smaller than the original block, with the extra land now added to Kara at no. 26-28 next door.
1893, known as Maringa, the home of Mrs J Francis MacMullen, who sold in 1894 to a Mrs Sinclair. Perhaps at this time the Edwardian style nameplate 'Maringa' lwas added.
1905 it became Maringa private hospital, perhaps more of a hospice, with many death notices. This required that St Kilda Council change their policy prohibiting private hospitals ("PRIVATE HOSPITALS AT ST. KILDA" The Age 20 June 1905, p6)
c1914, it was Maringa guest house, with 'moderate tariff', run by Mrs Farrant.
In 1923 Maringa was advertised as having been extended 'in first class style', with 25 single rooms, 'hot and cold showers and baths in abundance'. This is likely when the rear wing was rebuilt with an additional floor and extended to the lane behind, and a second wing added behind the house.
In 1932 Mrs Farrant died, and appears to have passed Maringa to her sister, Mrs CA Wendt, who occupied some large part of the house. Maringa becomes the home of Mr & Mrs C A Wendt, and there was a ballroom, with parties and charity events advertised there.
1950s or 60s a block of flats was built in the south garden area, close to the house.
By the 70s it was more of a boarding house.
1998 The large rear wings subdivided off as a rooming house accessed from the rear lane, possibly along with the 50s flats. House was former hospital and rooming house. Converted into apartments. 'In disastrous shape' when purchased. Recreated entrances and archways with columns etc. (Herald Sun Real Estate, 28 March 1998, p 3).
The Maringa nameplate in the 1978 photo removed, and a few details added to the lower level. A Victorian style fence was added and the cast iron verandah recreated.
