Andrew Newell, whose family this was built for, was from Massachusetts. The name “Shawmut” most likely references the Shawmut Peninsula in Boston. Newell worked for his father’s company, Newell & Co., which represented American wool buyers and those in the shipping industry in Melbourne. He also became the chairman of the National Mutual Life Association of Australasia. Shawmut was demolished in the 1920s when the site was subdivided. |
