Joseph Panton 1831-1913
Susan Grant is a Committee Member of the Flinders District Historical Society and the Port Phillip Pioneers Group. Susan's fascination with Joseph Panton started with her interest in his land holdings in Flinders. Panton arrived from Scotland to try his luck on the goldfields and remarkably went on to be a highly influential public official and pioneer. He was a Gold Field’s Commissioner influential in establishing the Chinese Protectorate; a Police Magistrate; geologist; winemaker, explorer, land speculator, pastoralist, and artist. Panton,and his wife (and children) lived in St Kilda for several years and are buried in the St Kilda Cemetry.
