The St Kilda Historical Society, in partnership with the Glen Eira Historical Society, presented a talk by Susan Grant on Joseph Panton (1831-1913), a highly influential early St Kilda resident.
Susan's interest in Joseph Panton began through her research into his landholdings in Flinders. The presentation explored the life of Panton, who arrived from Scotland to try his luck on the goldfields and went on to become a public official and pioneer.
Members heard about Panton's many roles, including Gold Fields Commissioner, where he was influential in establishing the Chinese Protectorate, as well as Police Magistrate, geologist, winemaker, explorer, land speculator, pastoralist and artist.
The presentation also examined Panton's connection to St Kilda, where he lived with his wife and children for several years. Joseph and his wife are buried in St Kilda Cemetery.
