Member only event with Professor Boris Frankel

Thursday 8 December 2022

4:00-6:00pm

St Kilda Army and Navy Club (upstairs)

88 Acland Street, St Kilda

Few suburbs in Melbourne have suffered as much as St.Kilda in the past seventy-five years.

In this personal account, Boris Frankel will describe the culture and ecology of the foreshore of the 1950s and 1960s with a number of colourful memories and stories, against the backdrop of photos from the Society’s Julie Millowick collection.  He will also discuss the wider socio-economic and cultural influences on the character of post-war St.Kilda since the 1950s and how it had its guts ripped out by the political economic vandalism of various governments and developers.

Professor Boris Frankel is a political economist, social theorist, and cultural critic. He is Honorary Principal Fellow at the University of Melbourne. He has lived in different parts of St.Kilda since 1950 and worked at the Palais Theatre, Luna Park, Palais de Danse, Leo’s Spaghetti Bar and other St.Kilda landmarks.

This is a free member only event, with a complimentary drink on arrival.  Bookings essential.

*We are not sure when and why the dot in St.Kilda disappeared. It can still be seen on numerous memorabilia items.
