A grand mansion known as D'Almeida built for Dr Charles M Lempriere in c1856 on a relatively narrow site next to Oberwyl, built just before. It was extended probably in 1887, later becoming a private hotel known as Inveravon, and demolished c1970.

  • Date Built: c1856, 1887
  • Demolished: 1970s
  • Architects:

    1887 Sydney H Wilson

  • Description:

A substantial house of restrained character, with projecting pedimented bays, and an inset verandah between of Corinthian piers and wide, probably timber, piers at the first floor, with openwork cast-iron panels.

  • History:

It is not shown on Kearney's 1855 map, but is in the 1857 ratebooks as an 11 room house occupied by Dr Charles M Lempriere, and owned by William/Wilhelm Prell (who lived in Dalgety Street).

A photo dated 1872 shows the house without the projecting bay on the south side, which matches the 1873 Vardy plan. The MMBW plan of 1896 shows the the south bay was added by then, which has higher floor levels and projects further forward.  A tender in 1887 by architect Sydney H Wilson for 'additions to two storey residence' in Burnett Street was probably for this house, since the other known large houses in the street were built in one go.

1873 directories list the occupant as C M Lempriere, physician, at 'D'Almeida', and a marriage notice of 1887 notes Charles' full name was Charles M D'Almeida Lempriere, hence the name of the house.

By 1893 the house was known as Hinkley, when Mrs Thomson advertised vacancies for 'families and gentlemen'.

The 1949 photograph held at the State Library shows that by then the house was called Inveravon, and another photo from the 1960s shows it was a guesthouse.

The flats on the site now appear to date from the 1970s.
